How often should I get my racket restrung?
It depends on how often you play, your playing style and what string you use.
Strings naturally lose tension and elasticity as you play. We recommend that rackets are restrung after 40–50 hours of play and at least every 6 months, regardless of how often you play.
If in doubt, we're always happy to have a chat and assess your specific needs.
The Science
Scientific research points to the following rules of thumb:
- Lower string tensions tend to reduce shocks to the elbow.
- Softer strings tend to absorb impact and minimize muscle fatigue.
- Frequent restringing ensures that you play with a consistent tension, which decreases pressure on elbow and muscles.
Restringing Basics
String Types
Synthetic gut
This is a popular and durable string. Rougher versions of synthetic gut may give a better feel for players who use a lot of spin.
Multifilament
This is the most elastic of the strings resulting in a large sweet spot, but it is not the most durable. You may want to opt for this string if you have a tendency to suffer from tennis elbow.
Polyester Monofilament
This is a hard wearing durable string suitable for hard hitting players. It is sometimes part of a mixed string pattern.
Polyester Mix
This is a combination of a polyester string and a synthetic gut string, but is more durable than a full synthetic gut stringing.
Tension
Tension refers to how tightly the strings are strung in the racket.
The typical tension range is between 50 to 60 pounds.
Rackets often come with a recommended tension range.
Generally:
- Higher tension gives more control
- Lower tension provides more power.
